If you look closely you can see coffins hanging from the cliff side. It is tradition that important individuals (mayors, tribe leaders, etc.) are hung in wooden coffins on the sides of cliffs.

Dom (Peace Corps volunteer) pointing to the "Saddle". This was the starting point of our hike in Batad, a small village outside of Banaue, Mt. Province. From the Saddle we hiked to a waterfall at the base of the mountain then to a small village, Cambulo, and back out to Batad. We climbed, up and down, over 3,000 steps! Unfortunately our guide failed to mention that the main trail was washed away and that we had too much stuff!

We had just climbed up to the road on our 2nd day, exhausted and sweaty, when we came about this woman. She had a large rice sack, filled, hanging from her head, barefoot, and kicking our ass! It was a humbling experience but one we will remember forever.

The bus driver asked us to get off the bus during this point. Landslides during this current rainy season have caused major landslides all over the Mountain Province. Many roads and bridges have been washed away, inlcuding our trail for the hike. This bus almost tipped over the side, reassuring why the driver asked us to get off!
